Ethics & Sustainability
Consciously created for a slower pace of life.
We are aware the impact the industry has on both our planet & people. In creating every piece of Bower we consider our carbon footprint, the impact on the environment & the safety / wellbeing of those who produce each component that makes our garments.
Part of giving our customers the knowledge to make the right purchases we are trying to aim for transparency. This means disclosing our factories & suppliers names & addresses, responding to any requests for information about our product & constantly improving on our processes.
From March 2019 1% of all orders will be donated to the Healthy Seas initiative. Healthy Seas was established with the aim to remove waste, in particular fishing nets, from the seas for the purpose of creating healthier oceans & recycling marine litter into textile products. They apply a 2 way approach in order to achieve their mission. Namely, recovering ghost fishing nets from our seas & ensuring discarded nets will not end up in marine ecosystems or in landfill. To learn more about what Healthy Seas do & where your 1% donation will be used visit healthyseas.org
We have partnered with a small atelier in Rimini, Italy called GISE SrL, who have over 20 years experience producing swim & resort wear. Our choice to produce in Europe is to ensure we can visit regularly and guarantee that all employees are paid under EU guidelines and are provided with safe working conditions.
We can guarantee the safety & job security of those involved creating our garments and are proud of the relationship we have with the team.
From October 2020 started working with Marketexteis in Barcelos, Portugal to create our jersey pieces.
In line with our move to Italy we have refined our fabric offering to one supplier. All swim fabric is produced using ECONYL® yarn, a 100% regenerated nylon yarn derived from pre and post industrial waste such as discarded fishing nets, carpet fluff, tulle etc.
Our resort wear is made from a variety of responsibly sourced fabrics.
including linen & viscose. This is ethically produced in Portugal, printed to order & dyed in limited quantities to ensure minimal waste.
Our jersey is made from 100% organic cotton fleece.
All our hardware & underwires are produced in France with Santoul, who have over 50 years experience.
We have sourced suppliers who provide us with sustainable & ethically produced packaging. Our tissue paper is certified by the Eco Packaging Alliance, this means our supplier plants trees to contribute to global reforestation in areas of need.
Swing Tag, Tissue Paper & Sticker- FSC Certified which means the printed tissue is sourced from a forest & supply chain that is managed responsibly & sustainably. It is made from cellulose fibre where the active acid pulp is eliminated during processing. It is also lignin & sulphur free, meaning these chemicals won't be left behind when decomposing. Finally, the tissue is printed with soy based inks made from soybeans, a renewable resource. Soy inks do not leave behind petroleum based products when decomposing, they also have low levels of VOCs, reducing air pollution during the drying process.
Shipping envelopes - our packaging is curb side recyclable & FSC Certified.
We have now eliminated all plastic from our products, our poly bags are home compostable & our hygiene liners are made from commercially compostable adhesive & wood pulp.
We use DPD & UPS CO2 Neutral shipping for all deliveries globally.
Currently our business is made up of just 2 people (Rupert & Fiona, Co-Founders). We are committed to ensuring diversity as we grow our brand. We have a long way to go but will start small, this will be done through better representation on our social platforms, within our look books & with the creatives we work with. We want to ensure equal opportunities for all & have a culture that is based on being fiercely anti-racist. We have a lot to learn & ask our community to hold us accountable & teach us wherever they feel we need to be taught.
